Diet and milk secretion in the sow.

چکیده
Information on the effect of diet on milk secretion in the sow is limited. Sow’s milk lacks the commercial interest of cow’s milk, and experimental studies of milk secretion are inherently more difficult to conduct in the sow than in the cow. The sow does not voluntarily eject milk in response to stimuli other than those provided by the suckling pig, and manual or mechanical removal of milk from the udder is obstructed. Braude, Coates, Henry, Kon, Rowland, Thompson & Walker (1947) introduced a technique of intravenous injection of oxytocin into an ear vein to induce milk ejection and to permit manual removal of the milk, and this approach has since been used extensively in conjunction with mechanical removal of the milk by machine (Lodge, 1957; Salmon-Legagneur, 1959; Smith, 1959a; Hartman & Pond, 1960). Using this technique, a sample of milk suitable for analysis may readily be obtained but, for meaningful measurements of milk yield, a routine of weighing piglets before and after suckling, over a period of 12-24 h and with suckling intervals of not more than about I h, has to be adopted.

I in the chain sow diet --> blood serum of sow --> sow milk --> piglet serum was investigated in two experiments with a total of eighty-one sows and their piglets. In experiments conducted during the last trimester of gravidity and the 28 d of lactation, diets with glucosinolates (1.9 mmol/kg diet via 100 g ground rapeseed/kg diet (Expt 1) and 2.1 and 4.2 mmol/kg diet via 75 and 150 g rapeseed ...
متن کاملEffects of Conjugated Linoleic Acid on Milk Composition and Baby Pig Growth in Lactating Sows
The lactating sow limits the growth potential of the neonatal pig by limiting the supply of nutrients and/or not providing the optimum balance of nutrients to maximize growth. Therefore, alterations in sow milk composition to provide an optimum pattern of nutrients could improve piglet weight gains. Fifty-five mixed parity lactating sows (Landrace x Chester White) were blocked by parity and ran...
متن کاملLactating Swine Nutrient Recommendations
Many factors influence sow productive efficiency and sow herd profitability, but inadequate feeding programs for the sow are major contributors to problems with high sow attrition and poor productivity. The primary challenge of feeding highly productive sows involves minimizing the negative nutrient (energy and protein) balance during lactation in order to minimize short-term and long-term repr...
متن کاملThe effect of dietary active dry yeast supplement on performance of sows during gestation-lactation and their pigs.
Thirty crossbred sows and their pigs were evaluated through two parities to determine any reproductive or growth performance effects of an active dry yeast supplement added to corn-soybean meal diets. Sow reproductive performance from d 93 of gestation through d 21 of lactation and sow milk composition were evaluated. Pig growth performance was measured from birth to 28 d after weaning. Active ...
